5/12/10 - Wednesday - Dhekelia
So, today it was decided that we needed to eat some fish and chips - proper English style of course. I had asked a few days earlier my cockney cousins where the best place was and was planning to go there, but Androulla (K) fired a preemptive strike and offered to take us unasked (along with myself and Androulla, Mom, Nitsa and Maroulla came with).
We hop in the car and head down. On the way, we stopped by a women's clothing store that everyone knew. I get out of the car wonder around for a bit and notice the shop shares a storefront with an RC shop. I wonder around the RC shop, talk to the proprietor and end up buying a small helo. After an indeterminate amount of time, the women decide they've seen and/or tried everything in the store and we pile back in the car and move on.
Now Dhekelia is part of one of two British bases located in Cyprus. This means British Sovereign territory, which means military, which means no pictures.
Needless to say, the fish was outstanding. I dare say it may have been the best fish and chips I've had. But I may be biased because we sat by the beach, with a nice breeze, and a couple of beers.
We languished over lunch, headed back home for a nap and some rest.
After our nap, Androulla (the other one (O)) came by and picked us up for dinner. We went to El Tapatio - one of 2-3 Mexican joints in town. For those in the states reading this, think of Tex-Mex, but substitute Cyp-Mex in its place.
I was apprehensive at first, but willing to try anything. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and freshness of the food. Fajitas were excellent, guacamole was made minutes before. Subtle differences from US Mexican joints - no chips and salsa when you sit down, no refried beans served with entres (rice mostly). Oh, and a bit pricey 20 Euro ($30.00).
That's it for now... Stay tuned
