5/21/10 - Friday - White Tower, Archeological Museum
So, today we began exploring Thessaloniki. Thessaloniki is a walking friendly city. If you stay at a central location, a car is useless and you'll have trouble finding parking. It was decided to forgo the car for the first day so we could explore the city on foot.
After a LATE breakfast, we headed out. As you can see, it was drizzly and cold.
First stop was the White Tower.
Ancient pottery! And yes, you'll be seeing a bit more of this...
See the two in the middle? They were connected in series and used to carry water. An enclosed ancient aquifer.
There's really way too much information and pictures for me to post here. If anyone has a question, post it and I'll do my best to answer textually and visually.
Others were lingering at the tower, so I decided to walk on to the Archeological museum (more info).
Along the way...
Offerings to the deceased - Found in tombs.
And finally some sculptures of heads and bodies.
And finally the required mosaic with the appropriate description.
Culturally fulfilled, I went back to the hotel for a late lunch and some rest. Dinner was at a very nice seafood restaurant (7 seas). All the food was excellent, but the fried baby squid was truly outstanding.
That's all for now... Stay tuned...
