5/13/10 - Thursday - The Beach!

So today, was the day of ascension. What does this mean you say? Other than being able to use ASc in everyday speak? Well, tradition holds that 40 days after easter, Jesus' soul ascended to heaven (told you God was big here). For many (elementary school students, etc) this means another day off. For many of the rest, if they're not working, it means the first beach day. And being a strict traditionalist myself, that's where we went.

Frosa and her daughter Glykeria came by for coffe as well as the AC repair guy (Kypros – I went to elementary school with him. He still remembers...) Coffee drank, AC repaired, we climbed into the Uncle John's Ascot (OK, really this link is more representative (CE)) and headed to Larnaca.

Arrived at McKenzie beach, found a table at the restaurant, chilled and headed over to change for first salt water immersion of 2010. Waded in, water was a little chilly but bearable. Swam around, got water up my nose, and generally enjoyed myself.
Here are a few shots.

Got out, rinsed off and went back to the restaurant to dine on some fish fresh off the boat. The owner was not there when we arrived because he was at the port buying fish from the fishermen. Again, it was outstanding grilled, de-boned served with fresh olive oil and lemon.

Lingered over beers and conversation for a few hours then headed back for a nap. At around 7, I went to find my old best friend (Petros L.). Found his house, knocked, walked around and he saw me. Wondered who I was for a few seconds and then the inevitable smile and pull into the house. We chatted for a few minutes catching up, saw his wife's painting and pottery studios and made plans to get together later.

Dinner was at Nitsa's (K) house on the front porch with her husband, Poly and mom. Everyone else had pizza (serviceable for the island, but inadequate for US). I had Chili Con Carne I made a few days before.

That's all for now... Stay tuned...
